On 1/5/15 at 3:20 P.M., Columbia Police Department detectives arrested Stone Lavonne Midgyett, 19, of Columbia for involuntary manslaughter in the shooting of 17-year-old Deante Smith on 1/4/15.
Officers made contact with Midgyett shortly after 4:00 P.M. on Sunday at the scene in the area of Silver Mill Drive and White River Drive when a call of shots fired came in. Midgyett then responded to the police department for questioning.
Post Miranda, Midgyett reported a fight occurred between associates of Midgyett and associates of Deante Smith in the 200 block of White River Drive. Smith proceeded to retreat away from the fight after a group of Midgyett's associates "rushed" Smith. Midgyett reported as Smith ran, he turned and began shooting rounds from a firearm at Midgyett and associates. Midgyett admitted to pulling a handgun from his pants and firing approximately 14 rounds back at Smith. Smith suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Midgyett was arrested for involuntary manslaughter with a cash-only bond of $500,000.00. The investigation is on-going at this time.
