TYPE OF INCIDENT: Injury accident involving 4 tractor-trailers
LAW INCIDENT: 2014190411
DATE & TIME OCCURRED: 10/02/14 @ 0412 hours
ACCIDENT LOCATION: 123.6 I-70 W
INJURED DRIVER: James Warriner
Holden, MO
Age: 63
Disabling moderate injuries (extrication)
INCIDENT DETAILS:
The crash occurred as vehicle 1, a yellow/black Estes Kenworth tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on I-70 near the 123.6 mile marker pulling double trailers when his outside mirror was struck by an unidentified tractor-trailer also traveling westbound. As Vehicle 1 swerved to avoid further contact with the suspect vehicle, the rear trailer began to jack-knife across the roadway towards the median, and eventually became dislodged from trailer 1 and overturned, coming to final rest in the outside lane on its side. The separated trailer was struck by Vehicle 2, a white Pegasus tractor-trailer causing complete damage to the trailer and its contents. A third tractor-trailer collided with the rear of Vehicle 2 within the roadway after the impact, and a fourth tractor-trailer crashed into the grass embankment on the north side of I-70 while attempting to avoid a collision. The driver of Vehicle 4 was extricated from the truck by the Columbia Fire Department and transported by EMS for moderate disabling injuries. I-70 westbound lanes were shut down for approximately 2.5 hours while the accident was investigated and the roadway debris was removed by MoDOT.
The investigation is ongoing.
