Columbia Public Works has a full crew working overnight to continue to salt 1st and 2nd priority routes and residential streets. Residential areas are being treated from the center of the city first, working outward, and about 15% of residential streets had already been treated with salt as of 7pm. Priority routes are generally passable this evening, but some slick spots still remain so motorist should use extreme caution if they have to travel.
Temperatures are expected to drop below the salt-only effectiveness level around midnight, so crews are prepared to switch to a calcium chloride treatment if this happens. Light snow and a
wintry mix is predicted to fall this evening adding to slickness, but little accumulation is expected. The lower
temperatures overnight may cause refreezing on priority routes, and with the additional precipitation, trucks may need to pull out of residential areas to focus on maintaining passable conditions on priority routes.
Most trucks will be driving with their plows in the up position overnight to allow road treatments to stay on the surface and be most effective.
Customers took to the City's social media pages Saturday afternoon for updates on road progress and to comment on the roads.
Customers that have to travel should use extreme caution and leave plenty of space between vehicles.
