Fireworks

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

                                                  FIREWORKS

In 2011, the latest year reliable statistics were available, 17,800 reported fires were started by fireworks-related fires reported in the U.S. which caused an estimated 32 million dollars in property damage.

In 2011, U.S. Hospital Emergency Rooms treated an estimated 9,600 fireworks-related injuries. 3 out of 5 (61%) fireworks injuries were to extremities and 34% were to the head.

The July 4th Holiday should be remembered as a fun and enjoyable time when we reflect on the liberties we have, remember those who have and are serving our country, and to enjoy time with family and friends perhaps over barbequed hamburgers and hotdogs.

A tragic incident with fireworks can literally scar those memories.

So, this 4th of July, The Columbia Fire Department and The Columbia Police Department want  to remind citizens that discharging and/or possessing fireworks within the city limits is prohibited by ordinance. Leave fireworks to the professionals and attend the professional display at Sixth and Cherry parking garage at around 9:15 P.M. As a reminder, DO NOT bring fireworks to this display.

The Columbia Police Department will have extra patrol officers on duty for fireworks enforcement from Monday, July 1, 2013 until Friday, July 5, 2013. If you have a fireworks complaint, please do not call 9-1-1 but instead contact the Joint Communications non-emergency phone number at (573) 442-6131. The Columbia Police Department and Columbia Fire Department wishes everyone a safe and fun 4th of July.
