Limb Disposal Requirements Relaxed for week of March 18 on Normal Collection Days

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Due to the large number of limbs felled during the recent winter storms, the Columbia Public Works Department will provide one-time special limb collection and relax length requirements for limb disposal. This will occur on your normal collection day ONLY during the week of March 18 providing the following requirements are met:

  • The customer must call Solid Waste at (573) 874-6291 at least 24 hours in advance to schedule the special one-time collection of oversized limbs. Street department personnel and equipment will be assisting Solid Waste. For the special pickup, refuse crews and trucks won't be picking up the oversize materials. Street division crews with dump trucks and backhoes will handle the oversize items.
  • Limbs no more than 8 feet in length must be placed curbside for pickup.  Crews are not able to collect limbs if they are not placed curbside.
  • Limbs longer than 4 feet but no more than 8 feet in length are not required to be bundled.

Customers have other options to dispose of limbs:

  • Limbs which are bundled and do not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 feet in diameter, and 50 pounds per bundle, may be placed curbside on your normal collection day anytime during the year.
  • Limbs and other brush may be taken to one of three mulch or compost areas free of charge. The Parkside and Capen Park mulch sites are open dawn to dusk daily for non-commercial use only. The Compost facility at the Landfill is open 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

It must be stressed that customers who wish to place limbs which exceed 4 feet but are no more than 8 feet in length curbside for collection on their normal refuse collection day during the week of March 18 MUST call the Solid Waste Division at least 24 hours in advance to schedule this special pick-up. Regular refuse and recycling trucks cannot process materials in excess of 4 feet and thus will not be able to pick up oversized limbs.

We appreciate our customers taking the time to meet the requirements outlined so that we can help keep Columbia clean and at the same time allow your Solid Waste and Street Department crews to safely and efficiently serve you.
