Snow Shoveling/Removal for Seniors or those with Disabilities

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

Due to the overwhelming amount of snow, many seniors and people with disabilities cannot get out of their homes for necessities like groceries, shopping and doctors' appointments. Agencies that deliver services at home (home health, meal delivery, pharmacy delivery or other deliveries) are finding it difficult to get to the seniors.

Boone County Council on Aging (BCCA) operates a program that pairs volunteers with low-income seniors for snow removal. The program normally has a waiting list for these services.  However, in response to the current winter weather emergency, BCCA has temporarily opened its waiting list for snow removal for low-income seniors and persons with disabilities.

To be eligible for the program, persons must meet these qualifications:

A resident of Boone CountyAge 55 or older and/or have a disability which limits the ability to remove snowHave a monthly income of less than $1,400 (for a one person household)

Persons in need of assistance should call 573.443.1111, extension 20. Messages can be left 24 hours/day.

This program relies solely on volunteers. Many more volunteers are needed in order to meet the current need for assistance. Community members interested in volunteering should call 573.443.1111 to be matched with a neighbor in need. BCCA reminds volunteers to avoid overexertion in this heavy, wet snow.
