Board and Commission Vacancies

The City Clerk is accepting applications for the following boards and commissions.  Applications must be in the City Clerk’s Office, 2nd Floor of City Hall, 701 E. Broadway, by 5:00 p.m., Friday, April 5, 2024. Applicants can either complete and submit the online application to the City Clerk directly from the internet or can complete the PDF format online and then print, sign, and submit it by mail to the City Clerk’s office for processing.

BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT: 1 vacancy with term to expire May 1, 2029. Must be a resident of the City of Columbia. The Board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning, planning, and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings generally held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CODES COMMISSION: 3 vacancies with terms to expire August 1, 2024, August 1, 2025, and August 1, 2026. One regular member is needed from the following category: person experienced in energy conservation, and one alternate member is needed from each of the following categories: master plumber and person experienced in fire prevention. The Commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings generally held on the fourth Monday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

COLUMBIA HOUSING AUTHORITY BOARD: 1 vacancy with term to expire May 31, 2024. Must be a directly assisted resident of Housing Authority property or a resident of housing assistance in the tenant-based section 8 program of the Housing Authority, and be a taxpayer who has resided in the City of Columbia for one year prior to appointment. Duties include overseeing housing developments. Monthly meetings generally held on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. (Mayor’s Appointment)

COMMUNITY LAND TRUST ORGANIZATION BOARD: 1 vacancy with term to expire December 1, 2027. Must be an occupant of a Community Land Trust home. The Board is organized to preserve the long-term affordability of housing units created through public subsidies. Monthly meetings generally held on first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.

DOWNTOWN COLUMBIA LEADERSHIP COUNCIL: 2 vacancies with terms to expire May 1, 2027. One must be a representative of a recognized neighborhood association and must submit a letter from an officer of the neighborhood association certifying designation by the association as its representative, and the other vacancy does not have any specific requirement. The Leadership Council reviews the boundaries of an expanded downtown development area and works with others in creating a comprehensive downtown strategic plan. The Leadership Council may also work on other projects as requested by the City Council. Monthly meetings generally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m.

FINANCE ADVISORY AND AUDIT COMMITTEE: 1 vacancy with term to expire December 31, 2025. Must be a commercial banker with knowledge of public finance and investment banking, and a qualified voter and resident of the City for at least one year prior to appointment. The Committee makes recommendations on financial matters to the Council as needed. Monthly meetings generally held on third Monday of the month at 1:00 p.m.

MAYOR’S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HEALTH: 1 vacancy with term to expire November 30, 2026. The Council educates the public about the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates, and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings generally held on the first Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m.

PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION: 3 vacancies with terms to expire May 31, 2027 and May 31, 2028. Must be qualified voters and residents of the City for at least one year immediately prior to appointment, and shall hold no other office or position in City government. The Commission makes recommendations pertaining to planning and zoning related issues. Meetings generally held on the Thursdays following Council Meeting Mondays at 7:00 p.m.
