About Cosmo Fitness Trail

This 1.25-mile, 12-ft.wide asphalt trail was dedicated on October 15, 2000 and is open to walkers, skaters, and bikers. No motorized vehicles are permitted on the trail. It winds through the south end of Cosmo Park.

This trail was the first hard-surface trail in Columbia’s park system to offer use for expanded segments of the pedestrian trail user population. The roller-blading community, young children on bikes and tricycles, the elderly who find it difficult to walk gravel trails in other parks, people who use wheelchairs, and those who wish to use a trail year-round without the negatives associated with wet gravel during high moisture periods are all target users. The trail was also designed to meet ADA access and use standards.

The Cosmo Fitness Trail provides the unique feature of linking to the existing reservable shelters in the southeastern portion of Cosmo Park. It also provides park users an opportunity to experience portions of the park which might not otherwise be accessible to them, and it helps maximize the overall land use within the park for its recreational potential. Another nice feature of the trail is its ability to offer recreation for those people who have children participating in organized sports within the park.

Funding for this project was made possible by a donation of $41,000 by the Cosmo Luncheon Club, $46,000 from the National Recreational Trails Grant and $9,000 from the City of Columbia’s Public Improvement Fund.

The Cosmos Fitness Trail was resurfaced in September 2022.
