Ceremonial Proclamation from the Office of the Mayor
Thank you for your interest in requesting a ceremonial proclamation from the City of Columbia Office of the Mayor. Citizens can request a mayoral proclamation to commemorate special events.
In some cases, the Mayor presents the document in person. In other cases, it is picked up and presented/ displayed by others.
Proclamations may be issued by the Mayor to recognize outstanding accomplishments or noteworthy occasions for citizens and/or organizations in Columbia, Missouri. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis subject to their significance to the city and its residents.
Proclamations are ceremonial and do not carry any legislative or legal value.
Common Proclamation Requests include:
- Citywide events
- Recognition of cultural or ethnic groups
- Recognition of an organization or business
- Recognition of special occasions and milestones
The Office of the Mayor reserves the right to modify or deny any request.
Proclamations are not typically issued for:
- Matters of political controversy, ideological or religious beliefs or individual conviction.
- Matters that may suggest an official City position on a matter under consideration or to be voted upon by the City Council.
- Any group whose policies or aims advocate violence, hatred or any other position contrary to the wellbeing of the citizens of Columbia, Missouri.
- Funerals, memorials or deceased individuals.
- Campaigns or events that the City finds demeaning or disrespectful.
- Promotion of profit making ventures, products or entities.
How to submit a proclamation request:
Submit your request as early as possible. We require a minimum of two weeks prior to the date your proclamation is needed to allow time for processing, but would appreciate more time.
Requests for proclamations must be submitted with a draft of five to 10 “Whereas” statements as it will assist staff in the creation of the proclamation. See Recently Issued Proclamations for example wording.
If your request for a proclamation is accepted, you will be notified when it is ready to be picked up at City Hall.
