Applications for City of Columbia's Civic Academy now open

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The City of Columbia is currently accepting applications for its Civic Academy.

The City’s Civic Academy is a free, six-session interactive program that provides insight to City services and operations and offers opportunities for civic engagement in the city.

During the six sessions, participants will receive an overview of city government and its operations. They will also receive presentations from various City departments, tour facilities and parks, and participate in simulations of public safety equipment.

Over the course of six Thursday-evening sessions, participants will increase their knowledge of the City of Columbia and its services.  Applications for the City’s first Civic Academy will open Monday, Aug. 22, and will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 12. Participants will be selected on a first come, first served basis.

Civic Academy is open to Columbia residents 18 years or older. The program is free, but enrollment is limited to 20 participants.

"The purpose of the program is to encourage higher levels of civic engagement in our community through increased dialogue and meaningful participation and to foster a partnership between residents and City leaders," said De’Carlon Seewood, Columbia City Manager. "Creating a Civic Academy program has been a top priority for my first year as Columbia’s City Manager because I recognize the benefits it will have for both residents and City staff. I am thrilled to be able to launch this new program."

You can visit the City’s website at CoMo.gov/civic-academy/ to apply. Applicants will be notified of acceptance by Monday, Oct. 3.
