Columbia Police officers took a 15-year-old male juvenile into custody after receiving reports of the student threatening violence at a Columbia Public School.
On 5/22/17 at approximately 12:48 p.m., the School Resource Officer for Muriel Battle High School formally received information from school administration regarding a rumor that had been spreading among the student population. The rumor included information about a potential school shooting to occur on the last day of school. A juvenile was identified through the information to have made the threat of violence.
Threats of this nature, pranks or not, are taken very seriously by the Columbia Police Department. An investigation began into the incident. Through the investigation probable cause was established to take the juvenile into custody. The juvenile was taken into custody on 5/23/17 at 6:36 p.m. for Felony Making a Terrorist Threat with disposition to be handled by the Juvenile Office.
Although the Columbia Police Department will proceed with an increased presence at the school through Thursday, May 25th, we are confident the threat has been eliminated.
