Update - The contractor has advised us that work will not begin on Monday, August 10. We will issue a updated release when this work is re-scheduled.
Original release -
Beginning on Monday, August 10 at 7:00 am, Musselman and Hall, contractors for the City of Columbia, will apply a sealer named Onyx to a number of Columbia streets. The work on all of the streets is scheduled to be completed by early-September. All of the work is very weather dependent.
Onyx is a mixture of liquid asphalt, fine aggregates, recycled products, and bonding agents designed to seal the road to protect and minimize future maintenance treatments. Onyx is applied using a truck which sprays the product onto the road surface.
Onyx is roughly the same cost as chip and seal, helps increase traction, and the products maintains a very dark color which can provide significant contrast to the yellow and white lane marking paints.
Columbia Public Works will evaluate the product to determine how it compares to traditional chip-seal and if it can be used in conjunction with chip-seal to extend the life of streets before major maintenance such as a mill and overlay is required.
During the application, parking on the street will be prohibited and the street will be closed for 30-45 minutes while the sealer cures.
The list of roadways which will receive the Onyx sealer is attached to this release.
