Cathy began pursuing the Banjo while attending Hickman High School, where she once won a talent show with a dueling banjos routine.

Dave hails from Chicago but moved to Columbia to study Journalism at Mizzou. He helped manage Chez Coffeehouse, the focal point of Columbia's folk music scene. There he would play guitar accompaniment to fiddlers like Taylor McBaine and ultimately meet Cathy Barton. Since marrying in 1979 Dave and Cathy have toured and recorded nationwide in their mission to spread folk music to new audiences. The pair has been involved in the mission of the Missouri Arts Council (who also fund the Heritage Festival's art components) since the early 1980s.

He is a co-founder and mainstay of "Echoes of the Trails: A Western History Conference and Cowboy Poetry Gathering" held annually in Fort Scott, Kan. He also performs regularly at gatherings, festivals, schools and other events around the country. With his sons, who grew up listening to stories and songs about the West, he also performs as "The Branchy Boys."
