Columbia Police Department Joins National St. Patrick's Day Holiday Crackdown To Reduce Drunk Driving Fatalities

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

COLUMBIA POLICE DEPARTMENT JOINS NATIONAL ST. PATRICK'S DAY HOLIDAY CRACKDOWN TO REDUCE DRUNK DRIVING FATALITIES

The Columbia Police Department will be out in full force as part of the annual nationwide St. Patrick's Day Holiday "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" crackdown on drunk driving. The crackdown, which will include high-visibility enforcement throughout Columbia, will run from March 14-17, 2014. Officers will be working overtime for this detail. The overtime will be paid for by a grant through the Missouri Department of Highway and Traffic Safety Division.

The effective nationwide drunk driving crackdown will include high-visibility enforcement, high-profile events, and will be supported by national paid advertising, creating a comprehensive campaign to curb drunk driving over the St. Patrick's Day holiday.

Last year, 218 people were killed and 666 seriously injured on Missouri roadways in crashes involving impaired drivers. What's tragic about these crashes is they are clearly preventable. Impaired driving is a crime, not an "accident" and one of America's most often committed and deadliest crimes.  For more information, visit www.modot.org.
