Snow Operations Update - Tuesday, February 4, 12:00pm

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

A full Columbia Public Works road crew will be out plowing priority routes today and working overnight trying to maintain passable conditions for customers. Snow accumulation has reached 2" as of 11:30 a.m. so the no-parking ordinance for priority routes is now in effect, and cars parked on these routes will be subject to a $15 citation and towing at the owner's expense if necessary. Customers can find a map of priority routes at www.comosnow.com.

Road crews are reporting that priority routes remain generally passable this morning, but as snowfall is becoming heavier this afternoon, and traffic floods the roadways from the evening commute, plows may have a very difficult time plowing roads. The City is asking customers to avoid driving today if at all possible so plows can work as quickly as possible. Columbia experienced a similar mid-day accumulation last February, and heavy traffic and abandoned cars blocking roadways prevented crews from efficiently plowing priority routes and traffic was backed up for miles city wide.

Abandoned cars blocking lanes of traffic will also be towed at the owners expense if necessary. If a customer is stuck and calling for towing service, they should ask for the price upfront and report any concern of price gouging to the Missouri General Attorney's hotline at 1-800-392-8222.

Plowing crews will be able to move into residential areas once passable conditions are able to be maintained on priority routes, but with the snowfall only getting heavier, that may be some time.

Customers can get more information and updates on road conditions and the City's snow management efforts at www.comosnow.com and on the Public Works Facebook and Twitter pages.
