Snow Operations - Update at 7:30 PM on Saturday, January 4

(COLUMBIA, MO) -

National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for our area with forecast snow totals by noon Sunday of -5 inches with locally higher totals possible in some areas.

A full crew is now on duty. Trucks have been fueled, loaded, and double checked. Snow is forecast to begin falling between 8-10 PM. Road temperatures are expected to quickly fall below 32 degrees even though our high today topped out in the mid-40's - hence roads are expected to become snow covered soon after snow begins to fall.

Asking folks to remember that parking is prohibited on Priority Routes when 2+ inches of snow has fallen and because of the forecast, to consider not parking on priority routes after 5:00 PM on Saturday. We will issue citations if vehicles are parked on priority routes and 2+ inches of snow is received. You can sign up for reminder advisories and alerts below using the Nixle icon link.

Columbia Regional Airport is open. Crews will report overnight to treat and react to changes in runway conditions in an effort to keep COU open. With high winds and blowing and drifting snow forecast - there will be challenges. Air travelers on Sunday are encouraged to check with the carrier for the most up to date flight status information.

Solid waste (trash and recycling) collections will not occur on Monday, January 6 due to bitterly cold temperatures and wind chill. Collections are scheduled to resume on Tuesday and routes will be one day behind. The landfill and Materials Recovery Facility will be open Monday as we are collecting commercial refuse and recycling.

MEDIA NOTE - We are asking for help on your local broadcast and cancellation crawlers to remind Columbia Residents that Parking is banned on Priority Routes when 2+ inches of snow has accumulated. Most forecast are for this area to exceed 2 inches and we are trying to let everyone know they need to move their cars from Priority Routes before accumulations reach two or more inches. We will be issuing citations this storm should the 2+ inch accumulation totals hold up. Thanks for your help.
