With Mizzou's Homecoming quickly approaching, fans are starting to plan their game day festivities. Whether you're from out of town bunking in a Columbia hotel or a Columbia local that has big pre-gaming plans before the highly anticipated kickoff, the City of Columbia is strongly urging football fans to take advantage of the Columbia Transit football routes for transportation before and after the game.
The seven additional game day bus routes hit many major hotels, bars, and restaurants throughout Columbia, with a big focus on Columbia's downtown area, The District. "Out of town visitors can take the bus from most hotels without the stress of game day traffic and navigating an unknown city," says Convention and Visitors Bureau Director, Amy Schneider. But Schneider is quick to point out many local Columbia community members take advantage of the convenient service as well to get in and out of festivities in The District.
But the city says football bus routes are about more than keeping your spirits high, they also have many safety and environmental benefits on the community as well. Vehicle and pedestrian congestion around the stadium on game days can be a real safety hazard, as well as the excess of cars pumping pollution into the air in such a concentrated area. "Every car reduced from driving to the game is a win for the environment-and the community," says Barbara Buffalo, Columbia's Sustainability Manager.
No matter what your game day plans are this weekend, football fans are urged to consider public transportation in an effort to make homecoming a safe and successful event for the community. Drew Brooks, Columbia's Multi-Modal Manager and long-time Mizzou fan says "With stops within a block of the Stadium, there's no need to let traffic ruin your game day spirit."
Rides are only $1.50 per person and customers are asked to have exact change and avoid bringing coolers or beverages onto the bus. More information, printable route maps and schedules, and real-time bus tracking is available on the city's website at http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/PublicWorks/Transportation/.
